Search for products that replace fishmeal and fish oil

Published
In aquaculture, feed price is an important factor. The aquaculture industry is continuing to find products to replace fishmeal and fish oil, which account for the majority of aquaculture costs. Scientists are researching non-traditional ingredients such as seaweed, mushrooms and beef fat, but whether or not it is possible to produce new products to replace fishmeal - fish oil is still a problem.
Research confirms that fishmeal can be completely replaced with other products and the salmon will still have normal size. Researchers also evaluated dried seaweed as a partial replacement for protein in shrimp-raised fish meal, and gluten in wheat makes rainbow trout grow faster.
Soybeans can also be a low-cost alternative, helping to develop tilapia production. Soybeans will be in short supply in the next 10 years, soybean prices will increase and algae will be an important source of protein. Algae contains more protein than soybeans or canola oil. However, the cost of algae production is very large.
Aquaculture using plant-based feeds can also cause pollution, so people are also researching powders derived from feathers. But this powder may also contain antibiotic residue.
In addition, beef tallow products are effective in reducing some fatty acids in fish and can therefore also be a substitute for fishmeal.
