(Vietnam Fisheries) - Due to the increasing cost of using fishmeal and fish oil in aquaculture farms, scientists in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA are researching other alternative food sources with lower prices including seaweed, mushrooms and beef fat.
However, expanding the use of food resources globally remains a challenge. Currently, farmed Atlantic salmon can achieve good growth rates with food sources that do not contain fishmeal. Scientists are researching ways to use oyster mushrooms as an alternative food source for Nile perch. Previously, some places in the US used soybeans and microalgae as alternative food sources, but the price of soybeans and the cost of microalgae production have both increased.
